1500m Open Water Invitational swim hosted by OMSC in Kelowna

The Apple 1500m swim at Tugboat Beach is part of the Apple Triathlon series that takes place every August in Kelowna. The Okanagan Masters Swim Club hosted the 1.5km and 5km Open Water Invitational swims, and several members took part in various events throughout the weekend.

I think this is the 5th swim event that I've attended (and of course taken photos and video), so I guess I'm becoming a swim groupie. I am after all, the Media representative of the Fintastic 4 Swim Team, LOL. (Too bad it's not a paying job!)

As my husband Paul becomes more involved, and dare I say, a more competitive swimmer, it impresses me that everyone is so warm and encouraging towards each other, from those looking to rank in national events, to those simply working to achieve a personal best.

Congratulations to Paul for 3rd place in his age category (even though I know he was disappointed in only taking 2 minutes off last year's time); to Jeannette for placing 2nd in the Sprint Triathlon, and Tony for placing 5th, in their respective age groups; to Ashley for finishing her second Triathlon; and Phred for completing the Aquathon.

Also congrats to Randy who achieved a qualifying time to be able to compete in the Triathlon World Championships in New Zealand.

Go Team!

Shakespeare Kelowna presents Merry Wives of Windsor at Okanagan Villa Estate Winery

What I love about living in the Okanagan is the abundance of activities to enjoy in the summer. Put together 3 of my favorite things - sunshine, wine and theatre - and you have a winning combination.

This year, Shakespeare Kelowna's production of the Merry Wives of Windsor took place outdoors at the beautiful Okanagan Villa Estates Winery. Wine from their Vibrant Wines collection was available for tasting, and guests could meander around the property admiring the gardens, the architecture and the views over the vineyards to Lake Okanagan in the distance.

Merry Wives of Windsor was amusing and well-performed, and worth the trip to East Kelowna.

The show runs from July 13-30th, 2011.

Inspired by Family tree: newborn photo session of baby Kaia

I had the pleasure of photographing baby Kaia and her family. She was definitely not a sleepy newborn, and couldn't seem to keep her eyes off the world. One of the family dogs, Magnum, kept a close eye on what was happening, popping up in the scene, acting as Kaia's protector.

Some of the last photos I took were in the nursery. Parents Warren & Kate had painted the room pale yellow, and throughout the room were baby toys, with a special basket that held Kate's teddy bears from her own childhood. What I really loved about the room, was the silhouette they painted of a tree - the one right across from Bliss Bakery in Peachland actually. In the branches, they hung black & white childhood photos of family members, and one large hanging sign reads "a family is a little world created by love." Brilliant - I just love the idea!

I was inspired by the tree, and included it in a collage of baby Kaia.

Thanks Kate and Warren, for sharing the love of your new bundle of joy with me.

Kate told me that "Warren is absolutely smitten with his new baby girl"....awww, so sweet.

Mags made me laugh, how she'd just pop up to check out what was going on with baby Kaia.

This is the tree painted on the nursery wall - isn't it cool? Love the idea.

I'm not sure if it's clear on your monitor, but the tree silhouette is in the background of this collage.

Vimy Officers Mess and RMC - wedding of Christine and Mike

I love that Christine used the Knot's personalized wedding website (http://weddings.theknot.com) to post lots of info and photos of herself and Mike, how they met, and fun facts about the wedding party. It's a really cool idea to share some personal moments with friends and family before the wedding...plus there's a wedding registry, guestbook, tips on things to do around the city, and maps to make sure no one gets lost on the wedding day.

Mike and Christine met while they were attending university in Kingston, but it took them a while to realize they were meant for each other as more than friends. They spent their first summer as a couple in different countries, while Mike completed flight training at home, and Christine spent several months traveling around Europe. When it came time to propose, Mike  arranged a weekend away at Mont Tremblant in February, but with Christine taking on a new job, his engagement plans were spoiled. Later that winter they took a trip to Ottawa and spent the night at the beautiful Chateau Laurier Hotel. While skating on the canal, Mike proposed to Christine.

Fast forward to May 28th, 2011. The day before the wedding was miserable, with a constant rain threatening to carry over to the weekend wedding. Saturday started off really overcast but it cleared by the afternoon, making it possible to hold the ceremony outside on the terrace overlooking Lake Ontario. Inside, the Vimy Officers Mess has lots of character and old-world charm, and the incredible scenic views at the Royal Military College were perfect for wedding  photos, and held special meaning to Mike as his alma matter.

Congratulations Mike and Christine! May you always share an incredible sense of humour, and hope you get to travel the world together.

Customer Service Superstars - Does your dentist whistle while he works???

This will be the first in an ongoing series of "shout-outs" to local businesses who deserve kudos for being "customer service superstars".

Everyone wants to be a superstar, right? To excel at what they do?

You'd think so. Then why are so many businesses lacking in providing an outstanding customer service experience?

It's something that I strive to do in my own business. So I want to support other businesses who are setting high standards - by being their client, or shopping at their store, or using their services... then telling everyone about it to make sure they STAY in business.

When I did a Jerry Ghionis photography workshop a few years ago, he said that there was this awesome new movie theatre concept in Melbourne, Australia. A super-cinema experience, with lounge style reclining chairs and bar service brought right to your seat during the movie. Sure, it cost more, but the customer experience was far superior to your average movie. The last year I lived in Derby, England, a new theatre was built with this concept in mind - the whole waiting area was like a bar or night club, with sofa-style seats (so you could cuddle up to your partner if you wanted to ;0) - and it was a great experience.

What if your dentist offered that kind of experience?

I can't say that I know anyone who really LIKES going to the dentist...trust me, I'm not a big fan myself, especially since I've had a dozen fillings in my younger years, which are now being replaced over time by crowns and new porcelain (rather than ugly silver) filings. But what if someone made that experience as good as it could possibly be?

What would make you switch dentists?
  • Private treatment rooms
  • Accommodating office hours (open til 7pm, four nights a week).
  • A hand or head massage after treatment
  • Staff who all remember not just your name, but what you said you were up to the last time you had a visit
  • A dentist and hygienist who explain everything as they go along
  • State of the art equipment, like the only dental lab in BC to offer crowns on-site through new dental imaging technology and computer-aided design (so you don't have to have an appointment for the temp crown, then return 2 weeks later to have the permanent one fitted)
  • A dentist who is professional, courteous, friendly and relaxed...in fact, relaxed enough to whistle while he works? (Yes Dr. Morhaliek, you do that :)

Please email me if you know a business that you'd like me to recommend in upcoming blog posts.

cheers,

Angelique

Vintage Photography with model Lucy Luxe

I must apologize...it wasn't exactly the next post, was it??? (I think they were worth waiting for, yes?)

These pics were so much fun to shoot. I love using off camera flash and video light to create a more theatrical look. It really suits Lucy and that vintage/retro look she was looking for. Thanks to Sallie for the makeup (great job), and Borrowed & Blue Boutique for providing such fab outfits.
